Walk down 3rd Street SE on a Friday evening this July and the sidewalk tells you something has shifted. The Market Yard behind NewBo City Market is packed for a free show, the patio at 1201 Third Street SE is finally open again after eighteen months of quiet, and the block between 10th and 12th Avenue reads less like a cluster of separate businesses and more like one continuous room.
For years the standard line on the New Bohemia District was "the Market, plus a few restaurants nearby." That framing is out of date. Between the Chrome Horse building's two-part revival, the Full Bowl's relocation, and a stacked summer programming calendar, NewBo in 2026 has become a district that runs on its own weekly rhythm. If you live here, the practical question is no longer what's over there. It's which night are you going.
The Chrome Horse Building, Finally Full Again
The corner at 1201 Third Street SE was the biggest question mark in the district after The Chrome Horse closed in September 2024 after a 21-year run in Cedar Rapids. That space is now running as two concepts under one roof.
Mercury Diner & Drinks came first. A year and a half after the storied Chrome Horse Saloon closed its New Bohemia location, the first of two new concepts has started serving breakfast and lunch, with plans for dinner soon. Mercury Diner & Drinks is a new venture with chef Bryce Vogel and co-owner Hannah Huber under Kory Nanke's restaurant group umbrella. The kitchen is doing serious work from scratch, including wings, pork belly and pastrami smoked over a blend of apple and cherry wood, with the pastrami a two-week endeavor for curing and processing, served on toasted rye for a reuben or as a benedict over an English muffin. There is also a retail component built into the room, which Huber has described as filling the large space with vendor goods so guests can leave with something in hand.
The second half of the building filled in this summer. After a sneak peek patio party on June 6th, Rhapsody Spirits & Provisions officially began welcoming customers on June 16th, offering a laid back, eclectic atmosphere with elevated, fun eats. The menu is deliberately unpredictable, running from Cool Ranch Mac N Cheese Bites and Kimchi Fried Chicken Bao Buns to Colorado Pork Green Chili Enchiladas, Pineapple Peanut Chicken Fried Rice, and a Parmesan-Crusted Breaded Pork Tenderloin.
The important thing for a resident is what the pairing does to the block. One address, two rooms, two hours of service that stretch from breakfast into late night, and a patio that pulls the sidewalk energy from the Market Yard around the corner.
The Full Bowl's Move Is A Bigger Signal Than It Looks
A block over at 120 10th Avenue SE, another shift happened quietly. The Full Bowl has begun serving customers at their brand new location. The former NewBo City Market resident is now located at 120 10th Ave SE in Cedar Rapids, with the entrance off of 2nd St SE.
The Full Bowl is a scratch operation with a specific niche, serving vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options, including rice bowls, acai bowls, soup, baked goods, and house-made beverages, all obsessively made from scratch. Watch this pattern: a Market vendor incubates inside Rotary Hall, builds a following, and then opens a standalone storefront within walking distance. This is the second time in recent months that a restaurant from NewBo City Market has announced a new location. Just before Christmas, CR Midnight Smoker BBQ revealed that they would be taking over the former home of Cedar River Landing at 301 F Ave NW in Cedar Rapids.
The takeaway for a resident is practical. The Market is doing what a business incubator is supposed to do, and the resulting spillover is filling storefronts that would otherwise sit empty. That is how a district thickens.
Friday Night: Rock The Block
If you have not been to a Rock the Block in a while, the format has held. Rock the Block is NewBo City Market's free weekly concert series. Each summer, a variety of local and national touring bands take the Bankers Trust Stage in the Market Yard and fill Friday nights with live music. Rock the Block takes place every Friday throughout the summer from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Chairs are welcome.
One rule people forget: no outside food or beverages, with the exception of reusable water bottles filled with water only. The Market asks that you support the small businesses and get your snacks from the Shopkeepers inside. That is the trade for a free show, and it works in your favor if the plan is to pair the concert with dinner from a Rotary Hall vendor or a walk over to Mercury or Rhapsody after.
Thursday Detour: Weekend Rehearsal Downtown
NewBo is not a closed system. The city has stacked a second free concert night on Thursdays in Greene Square, roughly a mile north, and the July lineup is worth knowing.
The free Thursday evening events are part of the city's Summer in the Square program and will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. each week. Gates open at 5 p.m., with food vendors and community activities available before performances begin. Each concert will feature a local nonprofit organization and include a free-will donation opportunity.

The Thursday-into-Friday combination is the real unlock. Two free shows, two neighborhoods, one weekend, no ticket.
The Market Itself, Beyond Rock The Block
Rotary Hall's weekly schedule has expanded past the shopkeeper stalls. Two programs are worth putting on your calendar if you have not tried them:
- Food Truck Tuesdays. Running May 5, 2026 through September 29, 2026, with three food trucks per Tuesday, and only trucks that do not have shops within the Market. It is designed as rotation, not repetition.
- Weekend Guest Vendor Markets. These run year-round in the stalls, with outdoor placement under the awning May through September, featuring arts, crafts, jewelry, body care, eggs, honey, clothing, vintage items, and bakery items. This is the pipeline that produced the Full Bowl.
Standard hours at NewBo City Market during the summer are Wednesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The building is closed Monday and Tuesday, which is why Food Truck Tuesdays live in the parking lot rather than inside.
Freedom Festival And What Sits Next To The District
The Fourth pulled the biggest weekend of the summer, and for context on scale, the Celebration of Freedom on July 4 ran 4:30 to 10:30 p.m. at 475 1st Street SW, celebrating America's 250th birthday, with a 20-minute fireworks show launching from the 2nd Avenue Bridge downtown, beginning around 10 p.m. The point for a NewBo resident: the McGrath Amphitheatre is a short walk across the river, and the same walkability that makes Rock the Block easy makes the big civic events easy too.
There is a longer trailing calendar at McGrath through the rest of the summer, including a Cypress Hill date on July 21 and John Mulaney on August 13 per the venue's public listings. Those are not walk-up-and-sit events, but they slot into the same pedestrian corridor.
A NewBo Weekend, Built From The Research
For someone who already lives here and wants a use-it-tonight version, one workable stack:
- Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m. Weekend Rehearsal at Greene Square. Free.
- Friday, 6 to 8 p.m. Rock the Block at NewBo City Market's Bankers Trust Stage. Free. Grab dinner from a Rotary Hall shopkeeper on the way in.
- Friday after the show. Walk to 1201 Third Street SE. Try Rhapsody's patio if it is warm, Mercury's dining room if it is not.
- Saturday morning. Coffee and a rice bowl at the Full Bowl at 120 10th Avenue SE, then browse Weekend Guest Vendors back at the Market.
None of these require a ticket, a reservation, or a car once you are in the district. That is the actual news about NewBo in 2026. The programming is not the story. The way the programming stitches together is.
