The last float from TrekFest XLI rolled down Highway 22 on Saturday, June 27. By the following Wednesday, the Kirk statue in the park across from the Voyage Home History Center had its bench back, the museum's noon-to-four hours felt roomy again, and the parking lot at 361 E 1st St held three cars instead of thirty. That six-week stretch from the end of June through mid-August is the quietest window Riverside gets before harvest traffic picks up on 218. It is also, quietly, the busiest one on the Riverside Casino calendar.
The Thesis, In One Frame
Riverside spends most of the year reading as two towns stitched together by a four-lane. West of 218 is the 900-person community with the museum, the birthplace marker behind the old barbershop, and Murphy's Bar & Grill on the corner. East of 218 is the Elite Casino Resorts complex with the hotel, Ruthie's, 22 & Vine, Robert's Buffet, and Blue Top Ridge. Most weekends the two halves run on different clocks. In late July and early August they briefly converge, because the concert that pulls the biggest regional crowd of the year lands on the resort side, and the museum, the golf course, and every kitchen in town are inside a five-minute drive of the outdoor stage.
If you already live here, late summer is the version of Riverside worth showing a friend. The Trek pilgrims have gone home, the concert calendar peaks, and the six restaurants you actually rotate through all have tables open on a Tuesday.
Friday, July 31: The Concert That Anchors The Month
Stone Temple Pilots headline the Riverside Casino Outdoor Stage on Friday, July 31, 2026 at 7:00 p.m., with Candlebox and Buckcherry opening. The show is confirmed at 3184 Hwy 22 and is ticketed through the casino directly, which matters because tier 1 is reserved seating and tier 2 is general admission within the section with chairs provided. Umbrellas, professional cameras with detachable lenses, and outside food and beverage are all on the prohibited list; the venue's guidance if it rains is a raincoat or poncho, not an umbrella.
Two things worth knowing that the ticket page does not spell out. First, the show is all-ages, which changes the crowd meaningfully from a typical STP tour stop. Second, the outdoor stage is on the resort side of 218, so if you live on the town side and want to skip the traffic exiting Highway 22 after the encore, walking back across the pedestrian route to town is faster than sitting in the lot. Jeff Gutt, who joined the band as vocalist in 2017, told the Gazette this July that new material is on the horizon, so the set list has been leaning into the Perdida catalog alongside the Core and Purple standards.
The event has three named local underwriters on the ticket page: Kluesner Construction as title sponsor, and Atlantic Bottling, Washington Economic Development Group, and Woodruff Construction on the gold tier. That sponsor stack is a small tell about how tightly the concert calendar is threaded into the Washington County business network. It is not a road show that happens to stop here. It is a Washington County event that happens to book national headliners.
The Museum, After The Crowd
The Voyage Home History Center is the other reason Riverside shows up on maps that have nothing to do with real estate. TrekFest 41 pulled in guests Garrett Wang, Robert Duncan McNeill, and Denise Crosby along with authors Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore, and the museum was the epicenter of it. In August the lights are still on, admission is still free, and the volunteer at the front desk has time to actually walk you through the USS Riverside NCC-1818 parked outside, the transporter that lights up when you step on the floor circle, and the tree-carved Starfleet statue that even the volunteers admit looks more like Han Solo than James T. Kirk.
Regular hours are Monday through Saturday, noon to four, closed Sundays and national holidays, per the museum's own site. Those hours are short by museum standards for a reason. The building is city-funded and staffed entirely by volunteers, which is worth remembering if you want to bring out-of-town family through in August. Fridays and Saturdays are your longer, more reliable windows.
Two adjacent stops most residents forget to send visitors to. The bronze Kirk statue sits in the small park directly across the street from the museum, which is a thirty-second walk. The stone birthplace marker sits a couple of blocks away near city hall, behind the site of the old barbershop where local council member Steve Miller planted the flag on the town's Kirk claim back in 1985. The town did not open the museum until 2008, which is a twenty-three-year gap between claiming the captain and building him a room, and it is the sort of small-town detail that plays well over dinner.
The Rotation: Where Locals Actually Eat In August
The Riverside dinner map is short enough that most residents cycle through the same six kitchens on a monthly rhythm. What the review sites do not tell you is where each one fits in the week. Here is the version a neighbor would give you.

The Ruthie's menu was last refreshed on April 22, 2026, and the current version leans harder into shareable sides than the older configuration. The bacon-wrapped steak tips with bleu cheese and demi-glace are new. The 22 & Vine café is the underused piece of the resort's food footprint, because most casino guests walk past it looking for the buffet and miss that it stocks Heyn's, pre-made sandwiches, and pizza by the slice for a fraction of the sit-down check.
On the town side, Murphy's is the one Tripadvisor reviewers keep circling back to for the Iowa chops and the reubens with the corned beef stacked on toasted marble rye. It is a room where the staff know regulars by name, which is worth mentioning only because it changes how the meal runs. La Chiva Loka is newer to the row and is the reason the Yelp reviews for Riverside now include the phrase "shredded meat test."
The Golf-And-Lunch Loop
If the concert is the anchor of the month, Blue Top Ridge is the anchor of the daytime. The course sits on the resort side and the Clock Garden Café inside the clubhouse runs a shorter menu than the casino kitchens but faster service, which is the trade a lot of members make on a Wednesday. The nine-and-lunch loop is a repeatable weekday plan that most Riverside residents under 55 have run at least once this summer. It is also the easiest way to introduce someone from Iowa City to the resort side without committing them to a full evening.
The point of naming this loop is not to sell golf. It is to note that Riverside's compact geography means a resident can play a course, eat, cross Highway 22, walk through a Star Trek museum, buy groceries at Casey's, and be home in under three hours. That is not true of any other town in the Iowa City metro.
Looking To June 2027
TrekFest XLII is already on the city calendar for June 24, 2027 at Hall Park, 140 S Ella Street. The Riverside Area Community Club, which runs the whole festival on volunteer labor, opens its volunteer sign-up months out. If you have been in town more than a year and have never worked a shift, the parade lineup on Saturday morning is the low-commitment entry point.
Between now and then, the calendar quiets after Labor Day and does not spike again until the casino's fall concert dates begin in late September. The Elite Casino Resorts programming honors the 250th anniversary of the United States at every 2026 concert with recognition of veterans and active military, which is worth flagging if you have someone in the family who would sit through the show for that reason alone.
The Version Of Riverside You Show Someone Who Is Considering The Area
The 900-person census figure the museum's Wikipedia entry cites is the number that misleads people about this town. It counts households inside the incorporated line. It does not count the daily inflow across 218, the resort employees, the golf traffic, or the concert crowd of a Friday like July 31. The town functions much larger than its population suggests, and in late summer, that gap between headcount and activity is at its widest. Late July through mid-August is when the town works best on its own terms.
